Maize Farming Calculator

The Maize Farming Calculator is for maize (corn) growers: whether you’re rain-fed or irrigated, farming a small plot by hand or a large one with machinery. It handles the fact that maize is often grown in seasons (sometimes two or three a year) rather than strictly annual cycles.

Questions it answers

  • How much capital do I need to cultivate maize this season (or over several seasons)?
  • What will my production costs be per acre or hectare?
  • How much can I harvest and sell it for?
  • What’s my ROI, and what yield or price do I need to break even?

How to read your results

If you select “Irrigated Farming” as your production type, a whole extra section of irrigation costs appears automatically: installation, water, fuel, electricity, maintenance. Leave it on rain-fed, and those costs simply don’t apply.

You’ll also see a Low / Average / High Yield Scenario dropdown: a quick way to stress-test your numbers without re-entering everything. Switching to “Low” shows you a more conservative, cautious version of your plan.

Break-even Price / Cost per Kg is the same number reported once: it’s the minimum price you’d need to sell your maize at (or the actual cost of producing each kg) to avoid a loss. Compare that against real market prices in your area. If the market price is well above this number, that’s a healthy margin; if it’s close or below, the plan is fragile.
